Department Chairs, Administrators, and Student Services Staff
School of Engineering
Dear Colleagues:
I write with an important change in policy concerning the use
of partial research assistantships to supplement the stipend of students
holding fellowships, especially non-federal fellowships such as a Stanford
Graduate Fellowship. We announced previously that that Dean of Research
directed us to use gift funds and departmental resources, as opposed to
sponsored research funds, when appointing students to small percentage
assistantships.
Effective immediately, fellowship students, who are working
on sponsored projects (and not precluded by their fellowship from charging
their effort), may be appointed to small percentage assistantships.
The School will return to its own policy of having a 5%
minimum on research, teaching, and course assistantships; should circumstances
demand a lesser appointment, please consult with Anne Hannigan and myself. As always, the School sets a maximum funding
limit from all sources equal to the maximum 50% RA academic year salary and 100%
during the summer.
Thank you very much.
Sincerely,
John C. Bravman
